The Regulus TSV D is a thermostatic anti-freeze valve designed to stop water freezing in exposed pipework. A burst pipe caused by a hard frost is one of the more expensive failures in a heating installation, and this valve is the simplest defence against it.

The valve works entirely on its own. A thermal actuator inside the valve automatically opens when the temperature drops to 3°C, allowing a small quantity of relatively warmer water through — keeping the line moving so ice cannot form, then closing again once the temperature recovers. There is no electrical supply, no controller and no wiring, so it continues to protect the system during a power cut, which is exactly when frost damage tends to happen.
